Reverse Search Your Command History
What This Does
Search backward through your command history by typing part of a command you ran before.
Why It's Useful
Stop retyping commands. Find and reuse any command from your history by typing just a few characters. Much faster than scrolling through hundreds of previous commands.
How to Do It
- Press Control + R to start reverse search
- Type part of the command you want to find
- Press Control + R again to find the next match
- Press Enter to run the command, or press Escape to cancel
Try This Now
Run a few commands like ls, pwd, and cd ~. Then press Control + R and type "cd" to see your previous cd commands appear.
Mental Hook: Don't retype — recall.
