Search operators are keywords that filter results: from:alice@co.com, has:attachment, before:2024/01/01, label:invoices, is:unread.
Why It's Useful
Scrolling through years of email is hopeless. Operators turn Gmail into a queryable archive.
How to Do It
- Try from:boss subject:urgent to narrow results
- Use has:attachment larger:5M to find big files
- Combine is:unread older_than:7d for stale unread mail
- Click the search dropdown arrow to build filters visually, then copy the query
