Personal vs Workspace
What This Does
A personal Google account (@gmail.com) is free and owned by you. Google Workspace is a paid organization account (@yourcompany.com) managed by an admin with shared drives, policies, and billing.
Why It's Useful
Features like Shared Drives, appointment schedules, and advanced Meet controls only exist on Workspace. Using the wrong account type causes permission errors and lost files.
How to Do It
- Check your email address—@gmail.com is personal; a custom domain is usually Workspace
- In Gmail, look for your organization name under your avatar if you are on Workspace
- Ask your IT admin whether Shared Drives and Vault are enabled before building team workflows
- Keep client work on Workspace accounts and personal life on a separate personal account
Try This Now
Click your avatar in Gmail and note whether you see a personal account or an organization name.
Mental Hook: Personal is yours; Workspace is the company's.
