File Ownership

What This Does

The file owner controls sharing permissions and keeps the file if collaborators leave. Ownership transfer moves those rights to someone else.

Why It's Useful

Contractors who own client files create lockout risk. Ownership should live with the paying organization.

How to Do It

  1. Right-click file → Share → check owner name at top
  2. Transfer ownership: share → change editor to Transfer ownership
  3. Move files to Shared Drives so the team owns them
  4. Before someone leaves, audit files they own

Try This Now

Identify who owns a shared file and note the transfer option.

Mental Hook: Owner controls sharing; editors do not.
